Box 011: Strategic Plan

In my day job (really a day/night job), I am often at meetings of one sort or another. Today was a long day, so I was faced with either bailing on a box (no!) or bringing one to a meeting. I brought a small box lovingly prepped by my partner with a thin layer of gesso, and two pencils. During the meeting, I just doodled on the box. I don’t doodle often, because I’m very self-conscious about my lack of “being able to draw.” (My partner would say that’s only because I haven’t taken the time to learn–and as an art teacher, he knows what he’s talking about.)

So at the end of this two-hour meeting, I was a little surprised to find that the images on the box seemed to reflect my own personal take on the theme of the meeting, which was Strategic Planning. The Oregon coastline found its way in there (I’m looking forward to a visit to Oregon in October), along with a big strange guy and some birds…and even Houston traffic.

It was a very simple process…but in some ways, that’s very liberating. There’s less process–less glue, cutting, image-finding, etc. Less process seemed to facilitate more subconscious.  I think I should bring pencils with me more often.

Documentation is still a challenge.  All of my photos look a little yellow.
